What a custom dress costs

Every figure below is a manufacturer quote for a dress as designed — the price to produce that specific garment, before any customer decides to order it. Quotes are per design; where a design received several quotes we take its median.

Median quoted price for a custom dress, by occasion · 383 quoted designs, Aug 2025 – Jul 2026 · USD

Other occasions29$760$950$1,145$637–$1,930
All occasions383$851$1,130$1,639$637–$3,050

The clearest pattern is the wedding premium: at a median of $1,734 against $959 for prom, a custom wedding dress is quoted at roughly 1.8 times a custom prom dress. Wedding designs more often combine structured silhouettes with heavier fabrics — duchess satin, mikado — and larger areas of lace or beaded embroidery, all of which raise both materials and labour.

The spread matters as much as the midpoint. Half of all custom dresses were quoted between $851 and $1,639, and the full range ran from $637 to $3,050 — so “custom” spans a far wider band than the couture reputation suggests, though the top of the wedding range is roughly double the overall median.

Which styles people request

These are the design choices people made when they could specify anything, rather than choosing from what a shop happened to stock.

Prom skews to body-skimming shapes; weddings skew to structure and volume.

Methodology

Source and window

All figures are computed from Build-a-Dress production records for designs created between 1 August 2025 and 31 July 2026: 5,397 designs, of which 383 received manufacturer quotes. No third-party, panel or scraped data is used.

Prices are quotes, not amounts paid

Every price is a manufacturer quote for a specific design — what our production partners quoted to make that garment. It is not a record of what customers ultimately paid, and this report makes no claim about final transaction values. Where a design received multiple quotes, its median quote is used, and percentiles are computed across designs.

The pricing subset is self-selected

The 383 quoted designs are those that progressed far enough to request a quote, out of 5,397 designs overall. People who ask for a quote are further along and more committed than people who are browsing, so the price distribution describes serious custom-dress enquiries rather than all visitors. Style figures, by contrast, are computed across all designs.

Designs, not people

All shares are expressed as a share of designs, never a share of customers. The 5,397 designs were created by 3,860 people, an average of 1.40 designs each. Repeating the silhouette analysis with only each person’s first design leaves the ranking unchanged and moves individual shares by no more than about one percentage point.

Designs are made inside a guided tool

Designs are created in conversation with Build-a-Dress’s AI design assistant, which asks about occasion and preferences and offers options. These figures therefore describe choices people make within a guided design process, not unprompted open-ended preference. Style mixes differ markedly by occasion — mermaid is far more common for prom than for weddings — which indicates the variation reflects genuine preference rather than a single default.

Privacy

Aggregates only. No individual customer, design or order is identifiable. No cell with fewer than 20 designs is published — quinceañera, bridesmaid and other small categories are combined into “Other occasions” in the price table for this reason. No body measurements or size data are published in any form.

Free-text normalisation

Silhouette, fabric and colour are stored partly as free text and required canonicalisation before counting — 522 distinct raw silhouette values collapse to the categories shown once label-plus-description strings and punctuation variants are normalised.

What this data cannot tell you

We do not publish production lead times or delivery timelines: our completed-order records are too few to support a reliable figure, and we would rather publish nothing than an unreliable number. We intend to include lead-time data in a future edition.

Updates

This page is recomputed from source periodically; the dataset window above, not the publication date, defines what the figures describe.
